Overview
The Seagate SkyHawk 2TB Internal Hard Drive (model ST2000VX015) is engineered specifically for continuous-duty surveillance environments. Unlike general-purpose desktop drives, it is rated for 8,760 power-on hours per year — the equivalent of around-the-clock operation — and carries a workload rate limit of 180 TB per year to match the high write demands of multi-camera recording systems. The drive connects via SATA 6 Gb/s and delivers a maximum sustained transfer rate of 180 MB/s, supported by a 256 MB cache buffer. Its ImagePerfect firmware is tuned to minimise dropped frames and reduce video errors during simultaneous write streams from up to 64 HD cameras, making it well-suited for small-to-medium NVR and DVR installations that occupy up to 8 drive bays. Reliability features include a mean time between failures (MTBF) rating of 1,000,000 hours, 600,000 rated load/unload cycles, and a non-recoverable read error rate of no more than 1 per 10^14 bits read. Tarnish-resistant components protect internal circuitry against environmental degradation, while the air-based drive design (SMR recording technology) keeps operating power low — just 3.7 W average during operation and 2.5 W at idle, dropping to 0.25 W in standby. SkyHawk Health Management (where enabled) provides proactive monitoring focused on prevention, intervention, and recovery, including RAID RapidRebuild technology for faster volume reconstruction. Every drive comes backed by a 3-year limited warranty and a 3-year Rescue Data Recovery Services plan.
