Overview
The AMD Ryzen 9 9900X3D is a high-performance desktop processor launched in January 2025, built on AMD's Zen 5 (Granite Ridge) architecture and designed exclusively for the AM5 platform. It features 12 physical cores and 24 threads via AMD Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT), making it a strong choice for demanding workloads that benefit from both high single-thread speed and substantial multi-threaded throughput. At the heart of the 9900X3D is AMD's 3D V-Cache technology, which stacks an additional cache die directly on top of the CPU die to deliver a massive 128 MB of L3 cache — vastly more than conventional processors — complemented by 12 MB of L2 and 960 KB of L1 cache. This cache architecture helps reduce latency-sensitive bottlenecks in applications and gaming workloads that repeatedly access large datasets. The processor ships with a base clock of 4.4 GHz and can boost up to 5.5 GHz using AMD Precision Boost 2, adjusting dynamically based on workload and thermal conditions. The multiplier is unlocked for overclocking, and AMD Precision Boost Overdrive, Curve Optimizer Voltage Offsets, AMD EXPO memory overclocking technology, and Ryzen Master software support are all included, giving enthusiasts fine-grained control over performance tuning. The CPU cores are fabricated on TSMC's 4 nm FinFET process, while the I/O die uses TSMC's 6 nm node. The package contains three dies in total. With a default TDP of 120 W, adequate cooling is essential; AMD does not include a cooler in the box and recommends a liquid cooler for optimal operation. Maximum operating temperature (Tjmax) is rated at 95°C. Memory support is DDR5-only via a dual-channel interface (UDIMM), with official speeds up to DDR5-5600 in two-DIMM configurations, and up to 192 GB maximum capacity. ECC memory is supported, subject to motherboard compatibility. Connectivity is handled through PCIe 5.0 with 28 total lanes (24 usable), 4 native USB 4 (40 Gbps) ports, and 1 USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5 Gbps) port. NVMe RAID modes (RAID 0, 1, 5, 10) and boot are natively supported. An AMD Radeon integrated graphics solution (2 cores at up to 2200 MHz) is included, enabling basic display output without a discrete GPU. USB Type-C DisplayPort Alternate Mode is also supported. The 9900X3D is compatible with a wide range of AM5 motherboards including A620, B650, B650E, X670, X670E, B840, B850, X870, and X870E chipsets, providing broad platform flexibility.
