Overview
The ASUS Prime B550M-A WiFi is a Micro-ATX motherboard built on the AMD B550 chipset with an AM4 socket, designed to support 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen processors as well as next-generation AMD Ryzen PRO CPUs. Its compact 9.6 × 9.6-inch (24.4 × 24.4 cm) footprint makes it an ideal choice for space-conscious builds that refuse to compromise on connectivity or performance. At the heart of its storage and expansion story is a PCIe 4.0 x16 SafeSlot for the primary graphics card, backed by two PCIe 3.0 x1 slots from the AMD B550 chipset. Two M.2 Socket 3 slots cater to NVMe SSDs: the first supports Type 2242/2260/2280/22110 drives in PCIe 4.0 x4 or SATA mode, while the second supports Type 2242/2260/2280 drives in PCIe 3.0 x4 or SATA mode. Four SATA 6 Gb/s ports and RAID 0, 1, and 10 support round out the storage options. Wireless connectivity is handled by an Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX200 module delivering 2×2 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/ax with 1024-QAM, OFDMA, and MU-MIMO support across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, with a theoretical maximum data rate of 2.4 Gbps. Bluetooth 5.1 is also included. Wired networking is provided by a Realtek RTL8111H Gigabit Ethernet controller. The memory subsystem features four DIMM slots supporting up to 128 GB of unbuffered DDR4 in dual-channel mode, with native speeds of DDR4-2133 through DDR4-3200 and overclocked profiles reaching DDR4-4600 (DDR4-4800 O.C. with Ryzen PRO). ASUS OptiMem trace layout is included to help memory kits achieve higher frequencies at lower voltages. The power delivery section uses an 8+1 DrMOS power stage design paired with high-quality alloy chokes and a VRM heatsink with a thermal pad for improved heat transfer. Fan control is managed through hybrid fan headers configurable via Fan Xpert 2+ software or the UEFI BIOS. Display outputs on the rear I/O include HDMI 2.1 (4K@60 Hz), DVI-D, and D-Sub. USB connectivity consists of six rear ports — two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A and four USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A — plus internal headers supporting an additional six front-panel ports. Audio is powered by a Realtek ALC887 codec with 7.1 surround sound, 24-bit/192 kHz playback, dedicated audio PCB layers, audio shielding, and premium Japanese capacitors. ASUS 5X Protection III covers LANGuard surge protection, DRAM overcurrent protection, overvoltage protection, SafeSlot Core reinforcement, and a stainless-steel back I/O panel. Aura Sync RGB is supported via two standard RGB headers and one Addressable Gen 2 RGB header. The BIOS uses a 256 Mb Flash ROM with UEFI AMI BIOS including CrashFree BIOS 3 and EZ Flash 3.
