The ASUS ROG Crosshair VIII Dark Hero is a high-performance AM4 socket motherboard purpose-built for AMD Ryzen processors, including the Ryzen 5000 series (Zen 3). Designed with a stealthy aesthetic and passive chipset cooling, it combines robust power delivery with a comprehensive cooling infrastructure to sustain demanding workloads and extended gaming sessions. The board accommodates up to 128 GB of DDR4 memory across four DIMM slots, supporting speeds up to DDR4 4600 MHz (overclocked) on 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen processors and up to DDR4 4800 MHz (overclocked) on next-generation AMD Ryzen PRO processors, operating in dual-channel unbuffered configuration. ECC memory support varies by CPU. Connectivity is a standout feature. Onboard Intel Wi-Fi 6 (AX200) delivers 802.11ax performance with 2x2 MU-MIMO, OFDMA, and 1024QAM support, achieving theoretical maximum data rates of up to 2.4 Gbps across dual-band 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies. Wired networking is handled by a Realtek RTL8125B 2.5 Gb Ethernet controller. Bluetooth 5.1 is also included. Storage options include two M.2 slots — one PCIe 4.0 x4 (types 2242/2260/2280) and one PCIe 3.0 x4 (types 2242/2260/2280/22110) — alongside four SATA 6 Gb/s ports supporting RAID 0, 1, and 10. The primary PCIe slot runs at PCIe 4.0 x16 for the graphics card, sourced from the CPU. Audio is handled by the Realtek ALC S1220A codec with SupremeFX technology, delivering 7.1-channel surround sound at up to 24-bit/192kHz. The audio subsystem features a dedicated ESS ES9023P DAC for front-panel output, audio line shielding, dedicated PCB audio layers, and premium Nichicon capacitors for low-distortion output. An optical S/PDIF output is included on the rear I/O.
