The Gigabyte 2500E 2TB is an M.2 2280 NVMe solid state drive designed for desktop and laptop PC upgrades where high sequential throughput and energy efficiency matter. Running on a PCIe 3.0×4 interface with NVMe 1.3 protocol, it delivers sequential read speeds of up to 2,400 MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 2,000 MB/s — a substantial step up over conventional 2.5-inch SATA drives that are limited to roughly 550 MB/s. Rather than carrying its own external DRAM cache, the 2500E uses Host Memory Buffer (HMB) technology. HMB leverages Direct Memory Access over the PCIe bus to borrow a small portion of the host system’s installed DRAM as a mapping table cache, allowing the drive to sustain strong random-access performance without the added cost or power draw of an board DDR chip. Power consumption is a notable design priority. Maximum operating power during reads is rated at 2,300 mW and 2,250 mW during writes, while the drive drops to just 30 mW in the PS3 idle state and as low as 5 mW in the PS4/L1.2 deep-sleep state. This makes the 2500E a practical choice for compact builds and laptops where thermal headroom is limited. Data integrity is supported through TRIM and S.M.A.R.T. compliance, over-provisioning, Gigabyte’s proprietary Media Scan technology (background NAND health monitoring), and an Error Recovery algorithm for intelligent NAND flash management. The free Gigabyte SSD Tool Box utility lets users check drive health, firmware version, sensor temperature, and perform a Secure Erase when needed.
