The Noctua NH-D9 TR5-SP6 4U is a compact dual-tower air cooler engineered specifically for AMD Threadripper processors using the sTR5 socket and AMD EPYC processors using the SP6 socket. Where many large-format coolers struggle inside rack-mount enclosures, this model’s 134 mm total height and 95 × 95 mm base footprint allow it to seat comfortably inside standard 4U chassis — an important consideration for workstation integrators and data-centre builders alike. At the heart of the cooling stack are two Noctua NF-A9 HS-PWM fans running in a push-pull configuration. Operating at up to 2,500 RPM and spinning down to as low as 400 RPM at 20% PWM duty cycle, the fans balance thermal load against acoustics automatically through motherboard PWM control. Peak airflow is rated at 96.3 m³/h and maximum acoustic output is 30.6 dB(A), both measured by Noctua under standardised conditions. A single NA-YC1 4-pin PWM splitter cable is included so both fans can be driven from one motherboard header without any additional adapters. The heatsink’s copper base and heatpipes are finished with soldered joints and nickel plating, while the fin stack is aluminium — a construction approach Noctua uses across its professional DX and TR-series line. The contact surface measures 70 × 56 mm, more than double the area of a standard desktop cooler base, which is sized to span the large integrated heat-spreader of sTR5 and SP6 processors. Airflow runs parallel to the long axis of the socket, directing heat toward rear chassis exhaust fans in most server and workstation tower configurations. Installation uses Noctua’s SecuFirm2 mounting system, updated to meet the higher clamping-pressure specifications required by the sTR5/SP6 platform. Four spring-loaded Allen-key screws are tightened with the included NM-SMT3 tool. NT-H2 pro-grade thermal compound comes pre-applied to the base, removing one variable from the installation process and ensuring consistent bond-line thickness out of the box. The cooler’s NSPR (Noctua Standardised Performance Rating) is 134. Both included NF-A9 fans carry an SSO2 self-stabilising oil-pressure bearing and an MTTF rating of more than 150,000 hours.
