The Noctua NH-P1 is Noctua’s dedicated passive CPU cooler, engineered from the ground up for fanless operation rather than simply being a standard heatsink with the fan removed. Its design centres on six copper heatpipes and thick, widely spaced aluminium cooling fins that maximise mass and minimise airflow resistance — both critical properties for effective natural convection cooling. The fin stack is offset asymmetrically toward the upper edge of the motherboard when installed in the standard orientation, allowing it to clear the top PCIe x16 slot on most µATX and ATX motherboards. On Intel LGA1200, LGA115x and AMD AM4 platforms the asymmetric layout also ensures full RAM slot clearance with no height restrictions on memory modules; on LGA2066 boards, RAM on the left-hand side of the socket should not exceed 45 mm in height. For users who want additional thermal headroom or a semi-passive setup where cooling activates only under load, the NH-P1 accommodates a single 120 × 120 × 25 mm fan via included fan clips. Noctua recommends pairing it with a low-speed NF-A12x25 LS-PWM for near-silent assisted cooling. The heatsink ships with a tube of NT-H2 next-generation thermal compound, which provides strong thermal conductivity to help extract every degree of performance from a passive setup. Fins are soldered — not press-fitted — to the heatpipes, avoiding the gradual performance degradation that can occur when differing thermal expansion coefficients loosen a pressed interface over years of thermal cycling. Installation uses the SecuFirm2+ Torx-based mounting system. A dedicated Torx screwdriver (NM-SD1) is included in the box, improving both handling and long-term durability compared with standard cross-head fasteners. Optional NM-I3 mounting kits (available free of charge from Noctua) extend compatibility to LGA1366 and LGA775 sockets, and Noctua has historically provided upgrade kits for newer sockets where technically feasible. Important: the NH-P1 is not intended for overclocked CPUs or processors with high sustained heat loads. Full passive performance requires a case with good natural convection, an open benchtable, or a chassis with active case fans.
