Overview
The Seagate IronWolf NAS 4TB Internal Hard Drive (model ST4000VN006) is purpose-built for network-attached storage environments, supporting 1- to 8-bay NAS enclosures from manufacturers including Asustor, QNAP, and Synology. Unlike general-purpose desktop drives, IronWolf uses Seagate's AgileArray firmware, which enables Dual-Plane Balancing and Time-Limited Error Recovery (TLER) — features specifically designed to maintain RAID integrity and reduce unnecessary drive drops in multi-bay arrays. All drives in the IronWolf portfolio use Conventional Magnetic Recording (CMR) technology, ensuring compatibility with NAS RAID controllers and delivering predictable sequential write performance. The 4TB model achieves a maximum sustained transfer rate of 202 MB/s from the outer diameter, backed by a 256 MB cache buffer. Rotational Vibration (RV) sensors are built in to compensate for the vibration generated in systems with multiple spinning drives running simultaneously, helping to preserve performance and data integrity. Designed for always-on operation, the IronWolf 4TB carries a workload rate limit of 180 TB/year and is rated for 8,760 power-on hours annually, reflecting 24×7 continuous use. MTBF is rated at 1,000,000 hours, and the drive supports up to 600,000 load/unload cycles. The non-recoverable read error rate is no more than 1 in 10^14 bits read. Power consumption is well-managed for NAS use: average operating power is 4.8 W, idle power averages 3.96 W, and standby/sleep modes draw just 0.5 W. Startup current is 1.8 A at 12 V. IronWolf Health Management (IHM) is supported on compatible NAS platforms, providing proactive monitoring with prevention, intervention, and recovery recommendations. Every IronWolf drive also includes three years of complimentary Rescue Data Recovery Services, with an in-house recovery success rate of 95% as stated by Seagate.
