Overview
The MSI B850 Gaming Plus WIFI is a full-size ATX motherboard built on the AMD B850 chipset and designed around the AM5 socket. It is compatible with AMD Ryzen 9000, Ryzen 8000, and Ryzen 7000 series desktop processors, making it a versatile foundation for a wide range of modern AMD builds. Power delivery is handled by a 12+2+1 Duet Rail Power System paired with dual 8-pin CPU power connectors. The board ships with MSI Core Boost and Memory Boost technologies, and its 6-layer PCB is constructed from 2 oz thickened copper with server-grade materials for reliable current handling under sustained loads. Thermal management on the VRM and M.2 areas is addressed through the Frozr Guard system. This includes an extended heatsink, MOSFET thermal pads rated at 7W/mK, additional choke thermal pads, and EZ M.2 Shield Frozr II covers over the M.2 slots to help keep SSDs within operating temperatures during extended use. The primary PCIe slot (PCI_E1) runs at PCIe 5.0 x16 for Ryzen 9000 and 7000 series CPUs, dropping to PCIe 4.0 x8 for Ryzen 8700/8600/8400 and PCIe 4.0 x4 for Ryzen 8500/8300 processors. A Lightning Gen 5 x4 M.2 slot is also included for next-generation NVMe storage. Three additional PCIe slots are present: one PCIe 3.0 x1 and one PCIe 4.0 x4 from the chipset, plus one further PCIe 3.0 x1 slot. Connectivity is a highlight of this board. The wireless solution features full-speed Wi-Fi 7 with Bluetooth 5.4, while wired networking is served by a 5G LAN port. The rear I/O panel includes USB 10 Gbps Type-A and two USB 10 Gbps Type-C ports, USB 5 Gbps Type-A, USB 2.0, a DisplayPort output, S/PDIF out, and audio jacks. A Flash BIOS Button and Clear CMOS button are also present for convenient maintenance.
