Overview
The MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk is a full-size ATX motherboard built on the AMD B550 chipset and designed for the AM4 socket. It natively supports 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen processors and is forward-compatible with future AMD Ryzen AM4 processors through a BIOS update, giving builders room to upgrade without replacing the board. Memory flexibility is a key strength. Four DDR4 DIMM slots accommodate up to 128 GB of unbuffered memory, with JEDEC speeds from 1866 MHz up to 3200 MHz and A-XMP overclocked profiles reaching up to 4866 MHz in single-stick single-rank configurations. Dual-channel memory architecture is fully supported. For storage, the Tomahawk delivers two M.2 Key-M slots. The primary M.2 slot (M2_1) draws lanes directly from the AMD processor and supports PCIe 4.0/3.0 x4 as well as SATA 6Gb/s, accommodating 2242, 2260, 2280, and 22110 form factors. The secondary slot (M2_2) uses chipset lanes at PCIe 3.0 x4 and supports 2242, 2260, and 2280 drives. An M.2 Shield Frozr heatsink aids thermal management on the primary slot. Six SATA 6Gb/s ports round out storage connectivity, with RAID 0, 1, and 10 for SATA and RAID 0 and 1 for NVMe. Connectivity is handled by dual onboard LAN controllers: a Realtek RTL8125B for 2.5Gbps and a Realtek RTL8111H for 1Gbps. USB ports are plentiful, including two USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps) ports from the processor — one Type-A and one Type-C — alongside additional Gen 1 and USB 2.0 ports on the rear panel and internal headers. Audio is managed by a Realtek ALC1200 codec delivering 7.1-channel high-definition audio with optical S/PDIF output. RGB customization is handled through MSI Mystic Light, which controls up to 16.8 million colors across 29 effects, with two 4-pin RGB headers and two 3-pin RAINBOW LED headers for strip expansion. The board also features a Flash BIOS Button on the rear I/O panel and a pre-installed I/O shield for easier installation.
