Overview
The MSI MAG Z390M Mortar is a Micro-ATX form factor motherboard built on the Intel Z390 chipset, designed to support 8th and 9th generation Intel Core, Pentium Gold, and Celeron processors via the LGA 1151 socket. Its compact 9.6 x 9.6 in (24.4 x 24.4 cm) footprint makes it well-suited for space-efficient builds without compromising on connectivity or expansion. Memory support spans four DDR4 slots capable of holding up to 128 GB total, with speeds ranging from the standard 2133 MHz all the way up to 4400 MHz under XMP overclocking profiles. Dual-channel mode is supported, and MSI's DDR4 Boost technology features optimised trace routing and an isolated memory circuit intended to improve signal integrity. Storage is handled by two M.2 Key-M slots — M2_1 accepting 2242, 2260, 2280, and 22110 devices via PCIe 3.0 x4 or SATA, and M2_2 supporting 2280 devices via PCIe 3.0 x4 or SATA — alongside four SATA 6 Gb/s ports with RAID 0, 1, 5, and 10 support. Intel Optane Memory compatibility is included, subject to updated drivers and BIOS. Connectivity is anchored by an Intel I219-V Gigabit LAN controller, and an E-key M.2 slot accommodates an optional Intel CNVi Wi-Fi and Bluetooth module (IEEE 802.11ac Wave 2). USB 3.1 Gen2 (10 Gbps) is available through one rear Type-A and one rear Type-C port, plus an internal Type-C header. Audio is provided by a Realtek ALC892 codec supporting 7.1-channel HD audio with S/PDIF output, EMI shielding, isolated audio layers, and Nahimic 3 surround sound software. For display output, the rear panel includes DVI-D (up to 1920×1200 at 60 Hz), HDMI 1.4 (up to 4096×2160 at 24 Hz), and DisplayPort 1.2 (up to 4096×2304 at 60 Hz). Two 4-pin RGB LED headers enable lighting customisation. EZ Debug LEDs assist with hardware troubleshooting, and XL PCIe clips ease GPU installation and removal.
