Overview
The MSI Pro Z890-S WiFi 7 DDR5 is an ATX form-factor motherboard built on the Intel Z890 chipset, designed for Intel Core Ultra Series 2 processors using the LGA 1851 socket. It delivers a professional-grade platform for demanding productivity, content creation, and AI-accelerated workloads. At the heart of its connectivity is Intel Wi-Fi 7, supporting tri-band operation across 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz (320 MHz channel width) with speeds up to 5.8 Gbps, alongside Bluetooth 5.4 with MLO and 4K-QAM support. Wired networking is handled by a Realtek 8125D 2.5 Gbps LAN controller. A rear Thunderbolt 4 port provides up to 40 Gbps transfer bandwidth and supports daisy-chaining of up to three Thunderbolt 4 devices, with USB4 (20 Gbps) and USB 3.2 (10 Gbps) backward compatibility. The board supports four DDR5 UDIMM slots with a maximum capacity of 256 GB. In single DIMM-per-channel single-rank configurations, memory can be overclocked up to 8600+ MT/s, with Intel XMP 3.0 and CUDIMM support included. JEDEC speeds range from 4800 to 6400 MT/s. Storage options include three M.2 slots — the primary slot from the CPU runs at PCIe 5.0 x4, while the remaining two from the chipset support PCIe 4.0 x4 (one also supports SATA mode) — plus four SATA 6 Gb/s ports. The board supports RAID 0, 1, 5, and 10 for SATA and RAID 0, 1, 5 for NVMe. Power delivery is handled by a 12+1+1+1 digital power phase design with dual CPU power connectors and a supplemental PCIe 8-pin power connector. The thermal solution includes an extended VRM heatsink, M.2 Shield Frozr thermal covers, 7 W/mK MOSFET thermal pads, and a chipset heatsink. Transient Voltage Suppressors (TVS) are fitted to guard against voltage spikes. Display output options from the rear panel include HDMI 2.1 (4K 60 Hz), DisplayPort 1.4 (4K 60 Hz), and Thunderbolt 4 Type-C supporting DisplayPort 2.1 UHBR20 (up to 4K 120 Hz / 8K 60 Hz) — active only when a compatible CPU with integrated graphics is installed. Audio is powered by a Realtek ALC897 codec delivering 7.1-channel HD audio.
