Overview
The ASUS ROG Maximus XII Extreme is a flagship Extended ATX motherboard built on the Intel Z490 chipset, designed specifically for 10th Generation Intel Core, Pentium Gold, and Celeron processors using LGA Socket 1200. It measures 12 × 10.9 inches (30.5 × 27.7 cm) and supports Intel 14 nm CPUs along with Turbo Boost Technology 2.0 and Turbo Boost Max Technology 3.0. Memory flexibility is a standout attribute. Four DIMM slots accommodate up to 128 GB of non-ECC, unbuffered DDR4 RAM in dual-channel configuration. Via XMP and ASUS OptiMem III — a proprietary trace-layout technology that improves signal integrity and reduces noise — frequencies up to DDR4-4800 (O.C.) are supported, while native speeds run at up to 2933 MHz on Core i9/i7 processors. Storage is equally extensive: four M.2 slots in total (two via the bundled ROG DIMM.2 module, two onboard), eight SATA 6 Gb/s ports, RAID 0/1/5/10 support, Intel Rapid Storage Technology, and Intel Optane Memory readiness. Expansion is handled by two CPU-connected PCIe 3.0 x16 slots (x16 or dual x8) plus one Z490-connected PCIe 3.0 x4 slot, with support for 2-Way NVIDIA SLI and 3-Way AMD CrossFireX. Connectivity includes Intel Wi-Fi 6 (AX201, 802.11ax, up to 2.4 Gbps), Bluetooth 5.1, dual wired Ethernet (Intel I225-V 2.5GbE and Marvell AQtion AQC107 10GbE), and 22 total USB ports across rear and front headers — including one USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 Type-C at 20 Gbps. A Thunderbolt header and the included ThunderboltEX 3-TR card extend high-speed I/O further. Audio is delivered by the ROG SupremeFX S1220 codec featuring 7.1 surround, 120 dB SNR stereo playback, 113 dB SNR recording, ESS ES9023 DAC, RC4580 op-amp, and LED-illuminated jacks with optical S/PDIF output. For overclockers, the ROG Extreme OC Kit includes LN2 Mode, Slow Mode, Safe Boot, ReTry, and ProbeIt measurement points. Power delivery uses Infineon TDA21490 power stages, MicroFine Alloy Chokes, and 10K Black Metallic Capacitors. A 2-inch LiveDash OLED display, AURA Sync RGB headers (standard and Addressable Gen 2), and an Aura sync backplate complete the aesthetics package. Dual 256 Mb UEFI AMI BIOS ROMs with BIOS Flashback round out reliability features.
