Overview
The ASUS ROG Maximus XII Formula is a full-size ATX motherboard built on the Intel Z490 chipset and designed for 10th-generation Intel Core, Pentium Gold and Celeron processors using the LGA 1200 socket. Its dimensions of 12 x 9.6 inches (30.5 x 24.4 cm) conform to the standard ATX form factor, making it compatible with most mid-tower and full-tower chassis. At the heart of its power delivery system are 16 teamed power stages paired with ProCool II reinforced power connectors, MicroFine Alloy chokes and 10,000-hour-rated capacitors. The board ships ready for custom liquid cooling loops: the CrossChill EK III VRM block — co-developed with EK Water Blocks — sits on a heatpipe connected to an extended heatsink, giving the voltage regulation circuitry the thermal headroom demanded by ten-core Comet Lake CPUs. Three M.2 slots each carry aluminium heatsinks, and dedicated water-flow headers allow integrators to monitor loop performance. Connectivity is a standout feature. The rear I/O carries both a Marvell AQtion AQC107 10Gb Ethernet port and an Intel I225-V 2.5Gb Ethernet port, backed by ASUS LANGuard surge protection. Wireless is handled by Intel Wi-Fi 6 (AX201), supporting 802.11ax with 2x2 MIMO, OFDMA and 1024-QAM across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands at up to 2.4 Gbps theoretical peak. Bluetooth 5.1 is included. The four DDR4 DIMM slots support up to 128 GB of non-ECC unbuffered memory, with XMP profiles and overclocked speeds ranging up to DDR4-4800 (O.C.) via OptiMem III signal-routing technology. Storage consists of three PCIe 3.0 x4 M.2 sockets plus six SATA 6 Gb/s ports; Intel Rapid Storage Technology enables RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10, and the board is Intel Optane Memory Ready. Expansion includes two PCIe 3.0 x16 slots (x16 or dual x8 from the CPU) and supports NVIDIA 2-Way SLI and AMD 3-Way CrossFireX. Audio is delivered by the ROG SupremeFX S1220 codec providing 7.1-channel HD surround sound, 120 dB SNR stereo playback output, 113 dB SNR recording input, impedance sensing for headphone outputs and an optical S/PDIF output. The rear panel provides 10 USB ports (4× USB 3.2 Gen 2, 6× USB 3.2 Gen 1) with a further 9 available via internal headers. A 2-inch LiveDash OLED display, two Addressable Gen 2 RGB headers and two standard 4-pin RGB headers enable system-wide Aura Sync lighting control. The ROG Extreme OC Kit adds onboard Start, ReTry and FlexKey buttons for open-bench tuning sessions.
