Overview
The GIGABYTE Z790 Aorus Elite DDR4 is an ATX-form-factor motherboard built on the Intel Z790 Express Chipset, designed for Intel LGA1700 socket processors. It supports both 12th and 13th Generation Intel Core, Pentium Gold, and Celeron processors, making it a capable platform for gaming and productivity workstation builds that do not require a DDR5 upgrade path. Memory flexibility is a highlight: four DDR4 DIMM slots support dual-channel configurations up to 128 GB total system memory (32 GB per DIMM), with standard speeds starting at DDR4-2133 and XMP overclocking profiles reaching up to DDR4-5333 MHz. This wide range accommodates both value-oriented builds and performance-tuned configurations. Storage throughput is addressed by four M.2 connectors — one directly off the CPU (PCIe 4.0 x4) and three from the chipset (two PCIe 4.0 x4 and one supporting both SATA and PCIe 4.0 x4). These slots are paired with GIGABYTE's M.2 Thermal Guard III heatsinks to help manage heat from high-speed NVMe drives. Four additional SATA 6 Gb/s ports are available, and NVMe or SATA RAID 0, 1, 5, and 10 configurations are supported. The primary PCIe x16 slot runs at PCIe 5.0 bandwidth directly from the CPU, enabling compatibility with current and near-future discrete graphics cards. Two additional chipset-connected PCIe x16 physical slots operate at x4 electrical bandwidth (PCIe 4.0). Connectivity on the rear I/O panel includes one USB Type-C port at USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 (20 Gb/s), two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports, three USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports, four USB 2.0 ports, one HDMI 2.0 output (up to 4K@60 Hz with compatible Intel integrated graphics), and a Realtek 2.5GbE RJ-45 LAN port. Audio is handled by a Realtek High Definition Audio CODEC supporting up to 7.1-channel output, with optical S/PDIF out also present. For system builders, the board includes GIGABYTE's Q-Flash Plus — allowing BIOS updates via USB without a CPU or memory installed — and Smart Fan 6 fan control with multiple temperature sensor inputs and hybrid fan headers supporting FAN STOP.
